Your eyes are the windows through which you see the world. We’ve all heard the saying the eyes are the “windows of the soul.”

For this reason we need to treat them with utmost care as you only have one set. We work out, carry around a water bottle to stay hydrated and abstain from “junk food” but what do we do to protect our eyes?

Preventative measures is the first part of proper eye care and regular eye examinations are key. If you are a parent, take note that it’s important to have your child’s eyes ex amined before the age of 5. Your child may be suffering from childhood problems such as amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismaus (misaligned eyes). We recommend to have your eyes examined yearly or as recommended by your doctor in Optometry. If any changes are noted in your eyesight please do not delay an examination as a problem may be detected which may benefit from early treatment.

Proper nutrition is key.

Fresh fruits and vegetables not only benefit your body with proper nourishment to keep it healthy but there are many essential minerals found in these foods to keep your eyes strong and healthy also. These vegetables are lettuce, green peas, broccoli, and spinach to name just a few.

Limiting foods high in cholesterol and saturated fats and focusing on lean meats and seafood is al so a good idea. Are carrots really good for your eyes? “Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which the retina needs,” says Dr. Lylas Mogk. “But we’re not in danger of having vitamin A deficiencies.” Green leafy veggies like kale, collard and mustard greens, and spinach are good for the eyes because they contain lutein, which studies indicate can reverse symptoms of macular degeneration.

And getting plenty of omega-3 fatty acids from fish and flax can help prevent dry eyes. But avoid omega-6 fatty acids, which is tricky in the American diet. Omega-6s are in vegetable oils. “There are very few processed or packaged foods that don’t have vegetable oils,” notes Dr. Mogk. “And the omega-6s counteract the good omega-3s.”

Proper eye protection when working around flying particles or working with chemicals is crucial. Guard your eyes.
If you are a smoker, we have one more reason for you to quit. Smoking increases the risk of cataracts, optic nerve damage and macular degeneration.

Protect Yourself from UV.

UV protection is very important to eye health as the UV rays have a direct connection to cataract formation. Wearing sunglasses will not only prevent crow’s feet, but a sunglass lens that is UV protected will block the harmful ultraviolet and other rays that play a role in the development of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Many lens options are available with UV protection so be sure to ask. The professionals at Visions Optical can help you with your questions related to UV protection.

In the mean time wearing your glasses and keeping them in top-notch condition will enhance your vision.
